Ken M. Akimoto, DDS, MSD



Dr. Akimoto is a board certified periodontist by the American Board of Periodontology. He is also an affiliate faculty at the University of Washington, Department of Periodontics.


He is a graduate of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University and has his Master of Science in Dentistry from the University of Washington. He is a multiple Seattle Magazine Top Dentist award winner and is regularly called up for industry lectures and education workshops on his state-of-the-art periodontal techniques. Dr. Akimoto has authored several publications and been the recipient of prestigious awards, including:

  • Osseointegration Foundation Dental Implant Research Grant
  • California Society of Periodontists Outstanding Implant Research Award


By combining his experience in restorative dentistry and periodontics, Dr. Akimoto is able to provide patients with exceptional care each and every time.

Ruby Lwo, DDS, MSD



Dr. Ruby Lwo is a board certified periodontist by the American Board of Periodontology, and an affiliate faculty member at the University of Washington, Department of Periodontics. She is a graduate of Taiwan Yang Ming University and earned her Certificate in Periodontics and Master of Science in Dentistry from the University of Washington. She holds professional membership in several organizations, including:


  • American Academy of Periodontology
  • American Board of Periodontology
  • American Dental Association
  • Washington State Dental Association


She also holds numerous awards for her clinical skills and accomplishments. Dr. Lwo uses her experience to proudly provide comprehensive periodontal care to her patients. She is also fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese.

Luciana Safioti, DDS, MSD



Dr. Luciana Safioti is a Board-certified Periodontist by the American Academy of Periodontology, part-time Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Washington.


Dr. Safioti  graduated from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and earned her Graduate Certificate in Periodontics and Master of Science in Dentistry from the University of Washington. She practiced eight years of general dentistry in Brazil and was a full-time faculty member teaching Periodontics at Nova Southeastern University in Florida for 3.5 years.


Dr. Safioti was awarded with the prestigious Clinical Impact Award for her novel clinical research on peri-implantitis, and with the Educator of the Year Award, both from the American Academy of Periodontology.

David J. Zhu, DDS, MSD



Dr. David J. Zhu is a board certified periodontist by the American Board of Periodontology, and an affiliate faculty member at the University of Washington, Department of Periodontics.


Dr. Zhu completed his college, dental school, and specialty training all at the University of Washington, where he received his bachelor’s (economics, neurobiology), doctorate, master’s, and certificate in periodontics. While attending UW, he met Dr. Oleg and studied alongside him during their DDS training. Dr. Zhu holds numerous awards and distinctions during his undergraduate and graduate studies including:


  • Restorative Dentistry Award for Excellence in Fixed Prosthodontics
  • Western Society of Periodontology Award
  • International Congress of Oral Implantologists Award
  • American College of Dentists Ferrier Memorial Prize

Richard Ansong, DDS, MSD

Prosthodontics & Implant Specialist


Dr. Richard Ansong obtained his undergraduate dental training at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, and completed a Masters of Science and Certificate in Prosthodontics Training at the University of Washington Graduate Prosthodontics Program. He completed a two year Fellowship training in dental implants, and dental implant-related surgical procedures, at Columbia University, College of Dental Medicine.


Dr. Ansong has lectured to numerous study clubs and dental meetings in New York, Seattle, and Washington D.C. on relevant topics in prosthodontics and implant dentistry. He currently works as a surgical prosthodontist in the Seattle metropolitan area.


Dr. Ansong and Dr. Oleg met at the University of Washington, where they crossed paths as they both worked on their training. Dr. Ansong’s interest lies mostly in bridging the gap between surgical and restorative dentistry. He strives to ‘simplify’ the complexities of dental care for his patients, and strives to help them boost their comfort and confidence via the smile of their dreams.

Andrew Johnson, DDS



Dr. Andrew Johnson attended the University of Nebraska, Medical Center- College of Dentistry in Lincoln, Nebraska from August 1986 through April of 1990. In August of 1990 he began his specialty training in Endodontics at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He received his Endodontic degree in May 1992.


He is currently the president of the John Smith Study Club for the second year in a row and also attends two other study clubs each month. He has kept his skills up to date by completing many continuing education courses each year throughout his career. He is a member of the American Association of Endodontics, American Dental Association and has applied to the American Board of Endodontics. Dr. Johnson is an Endodontist who enjoys educating his patients as well as treating them.


His most satisfying aspect of the practice is treating and caring for his patients. He likes to put himself in the patient’s position and treat them as he would himself, which is how he conducts all aspects of his practice. Making all patients comfortable, getting them out of pain and creating lifelong relationships is his goal for his practice.


Dr. Johnson is married with three children and two grandchildren, and he enjoys spending time with them. His hobbies include a number of activities, golf and basketball are among his favorites.

Brian Cheung, DDS, MD

Oral Surgeon


Dr. Cheung began his dental career at the University of Washington, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. Once graduated, he moved to Ann Arbor to continue his education at the University of Michigan, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery. After receiving his DDS, Dr. Cheung completed his MD degree from the University of Kentucky, and completed a 6-year residency through the University’s Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery program where he obtained extensive training in a variety of medical and dental diseases.


Dr. Cheung values the dental community and serves a significant role by belonging to a number of professional organizations, including the Washington State Dental Association, the American Dental Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.


As a lifelong Washington resident, Dr. Cheung is a Seattle sports enthusiast and enjoys hiking, traveling, playing a round of golf, and spending time with his family!


Ben Johnson, DMD, MDS

Oral Surgeon


Dr. Ben Johnson, DMD, earned his Bachelor’s degree in biology from Utah Valley University, before moving on to Temple University to earn his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD).


He completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. There, his training primarily focused on extractions, wisdom tooth removal, dental implant placement, and the treatment of jaw misalignments and diseases – allowing him to boast expertise in a full scope of oral and maxillofacial procedures.


Dr. Johnson was inspired to enter the field of dentistry due to the influences of both his father and his colleague. He admired their hard work, dedication to excellence and satisfaction, and the differences they made in their patients’ lives. That’s why De. Johnson holds true to a philosophy of treating every patient like family, and doing everything possible to make their oral surgery smooth and successful.


Dr. Johnson is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He enjoys being outdoors and taking advantage of all nature has to offer, fixing anything he can get his hands on, and spending time with his wife and five children.
